Sweet Hearts
Monday, July 31st, 2006We all know that too much sugar in your diet can be unhealthy, but an interesting study suggests that the sugar you eat provides more than just calories to burn.
Natural glucose, like the sugar in fruit, prompts your body to produce insulin and causes your fat cells to release leptin. This ultimately makes you feel full. High fructose corn syrup, on the other hand, causes you to eat more. Not only does it provide extra calories, but it neglects to send your body the “I’m full” signal, necessary in regulating diet.
Much worse, the liver converts fructose, far more readily than glucose, to triglyceride fats. Triglycerides raise blood levels of the bad LDL cholesterol, and lower your levels of good HDL cholesterol. This increases risk of heart disease, especially common in American women.
High fructose corn syrup is the most popular sweetener on the market today, with the average American taking in over 62 pounds per year. At bluehouse, we offer sodas and flavored coffee syrups made with whole cane sugar, and not high fructose corn syrup. It’s another way of offering a healthier alternative to a more common product.
