    Spoutwood Farm’s Mother Earth Harvest Fair - Sept 29 & 30

    Thursday, September 27th, 2007

    Something Old! Something New!

Spoutwood’s Fall Festival has a Dual Purpose:

    • To Revive Good Old-Fashioned Country Fair Fun
    • To Celebrate Good-for People-and-for-the-Earth New-Fashioned Sustainable Living in the Chesapeake Watershed

    Admission:
    Adults $8 or 2/$15
    Kids age 3 to 12 $5
    Kids 2 and under free.

Guests who decide to volunteer when they arrive at the Fair can request a 2-hour job assignment. Upon completion of the assignment, the admission fee will be refunded. For more information and pre-registration, email Posie/Dana Stout at fairyfestivities@yahoo.com .

The Fair celebrates healthy people working for and enjoying a healthy planet. Partly we pay tribute to the simple traditions, the fun and values of harvest festivals of the past where apples are pressed into cider, garden and farm bounty is proudly displayed, and the animals used to plow our fields or to clothe and nourish us are lavishly appreciated. In the spirit of good old-fashioned fun we’ll have country dancing, lots of music, harvest craft activities for kids, good food for all tastes and natural and folk crafts to marvel and delight.
More than a nostalgic glance backwards, however, MEHF is a vision-in-progress of sustainable living for a sustainable future for Earth and her inhabitants.

    Teen Girl Squad

    Monday, September 24th, 2007

Tonight at bluehouse, Christopher Gutierrez spoke to a packed cafe. If you haven’t heard of Christopher, you will. That is, you will if you are a teenage girl, or have a teenage girl in your family. Christopher is VERY popular with teenage girls. And tonight, he was alone, in the dark, with quite a few of them.

As a straight-edge writer, spoken-word artist, and dreamboat, Chris has toured with the Vans Warped Tour, and tonight’s gig with us is his last before leaving to tour England. He enthralled a large crowd of, well, of teenage girls, and was a fabulous sport, despite our building experiencing a massive power outage(!) during his set. Luckily, Christopher demonstrated himself to be an experienced showman, with a voice that can travel, even without a PA system.
    Here he is in bluehouse:

Chris’s two new books are entitled, “A Life Deliberate: Memoirs of an Unbreakable Boy,” and “On the Upswing of Life, Love, and Regret.” They are available here. If you, too, find yourself as smitten as the gargantuan gaggle of teen ladies to pack our humble home tonight, you can friend Chris on myspace, here. Hopefully, he’ll come back and visit with us again. And if you’re very lucky, maybe the lights will go out again.

    Beautiful New joshjakus Designs

    Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Imagine our excitement upon receiving our shipment of these amazing new pressed wool items from American designer Josh Jakus. Josh’s work is founded in two exciting principles:

    1. Using materials in their simplest form so intrinsic qualities show through.

    2. A rigorous design efficiency that strives to get the most impact out of the fewest moves.

Experimenting with the connections between form and function, these products question the nature of structure and space. Drop by the store to see the “eggflat,” pictured above, the “winepocket,” or our favorite pieces, the “um bags.” “Ums” transform from inspired handbags to flat surfaces with one zip, making storage and cleaning a breeze.

    Best Wi-Fi Café

    Bluehouse

    1407 Fleet St., (410) 276-1180

Man, we’re clickety-clickety-clickety on the keyboard here. We get our stuff done. The internet juice is strong at bluehouse; it’s like we’re surfing from tree to tree up in the canopy of a beautiful unspoiled rain forest. Maybe it’s the fair-trade coffee that makes us feel like that. The café part of Harbor East’s eco-friendly home store serves up fresh salads and tasty snacks like empanadas to sustain users through the long spells they tend to hang out there. Usually there are enough tables to accommodate everyone and their laptops, but only the tables near the wall have access to outlets. Something about bluehouse’s clean environment, those healthy floors and walls, we’re convinced, is good for concentration, because we’re on fire at bluehouse.
